How to Play a Big Multiplier in Expresso and Spin & Go (x10, x50, x100, x1000): Strategy, Mental Pressure and ICM (80/12/8)

ICM adjustment and exploitation strategy on big Expresso and Spin & Go x50 and x1000 multipliers
Comparison of the ICM Risk Premium between a Winner-Take-All multiplier (0% ICM) and a shared 80% / 12% / 8% jackpot

Over a year of grinding, your net ROI depends directly on your win rate on x10, x20, x50, x100 and x1000 multipliers. Here is how to tell no-ICM jackpots from 80/12/8 jackpots, calculate your exact Risk Premium and exploit your opponents' paralysis.

πŸ”₯ The golden rule that is worth thousands of euros a year

When a golden or red table opens, the first question to ask yourself is not "How many euros are in the middle?" but: "Are 2nd and 3rd places paid?" As long as the tournament is Winner-Take-All (100% to 1st), ICM is strictly zero (0%) and tightening your calls is a serious mathematical mistake. However, as soon as the structure becomes 80% / 12% / 8%, every paid stack in 3-way carries an ICM risk premium (Risk Premium).

1. The fundamental boundary: Winner-Take-All (0% ICM) vs Shared Prizepool (80/12/8)

As we showed in our study of Expresso and Twister jackpot probabilities, the rooms split multipliers into two big families:

  • Winner-Take-All multipliers (100% to 1st, 0% to 2nd and 0% to 3rd): this covers all x2, x3, x4, x5 (and x8 / x10 depending on the room). Here, finishing 2nd or 3rd pays exactly the same: zero euros. The value of a chip won is therefore strictly equal to the value of a chip lost (100% pure Chip EV, 0% ICM).
  • Big shared multipliers (80% to 1st / 12% to 2nd / 8% to 3rd, or 80% / 20%): on Winamax Expresso, PMU Poker, Betclic and Unibet HexaPro, the x20, x50, x100 and x1000 jackpots pay all three players from the start. Busting in 3rd costs you the step between 8% and 12% (that is 40% of a jackpot buy-in on an x10), which creates a real ICM (Independent Chip Model) effect in 3-way.

2. How to crush Winner-Take-All x4, x5 and x10 multipliers: punish the fear

What do 85% of recreational players (and even many average regulars) do when an x5 or x10 multiplier shows up on screen? Under the effect of risk aversion (fear of losing a "nice tournament" on the second hand), they make three massive psychological mistakes:

  1. They overfold their blinds against steals and c-bets to "wait for a good hand".
  2. They refuse to take 3-bet bluff or re-steal spots at 14-18 BB that are nevertheless EV+ in Chip EV.
  3. They go passive postflop (check-fold the flop and turn as soon as they don't have top pair).

Your optimal counter-strategy: far from shrinking back, you must increase your aggression frequency in small pots (small ball)! Lean on the high and low line badges of our HUD & In-Game Automatic Tagging: if a player already carries the [FBB] BB Over-Fold, [F3B] Fold to 3-Bet or [FCB] Fold to C-Bet tag in normal games, know that their fold frequency will climb another +8% to +12% on an x10! However, if they shove over you on the river, respect their action: the pool bluffs far less in very big pots on a high multiplier.

3. The 80 / 12 / 8 ICM maths: what is each chip really worth?

On a jackpot paying 80% to 1st, 12% to 2nd and 8% to 3rd, 24% of the total prizepool (3 Γ— 8%) already belongs to the three players from the first second. The fight is therefore over the remaining 76% of the prizepool:

  • The step between 3rd and 2nd place is worth 4% of the total prizepool (going from 8% to 12%).
  • The step between 2nd and 1st place is worth 68% of the total prizepool (going from 12% to 80%).

Unlike a satellite where all tickets have the same value, the 80/12/8 structure stays strongly oriented toward the win (top-heavy). Still, in 3-way, the fact that a third player can bust before you creates a Risk Premium (ICM risk premium): the extra equity you need to commit your stack compared with pure Chip EV.

3-way stack configurations (80/12/8 structure) Bubble Factor Risk Premium (extra equity to call all-in) Concrete strategic adjustment
Start of game: 25 BB / 25 BB / 25 BB 1,06 +1.4% equity Only tighten the bottom of your open-shove calls (e.g. fold KTs or A4o if it was a 0 EV call).
Mid-game: 15 BB / 15 BB / 15 BB 1,07 +1.6% equity Push your shoves normally, but avoid marginal calls with a covered stack.
Asymmetric stacks: You 22 BB / Villain 23 BB / Short 5 BB 1,22 Γ  1,28 +4.8% to +6.5% equity Maximum ICM alert: against the chip leader who covers you while the 3rd player has only 5 BB, fold your medium hands (AJo, KQo, 55-77) against a shove!
You are the chip leader (34 BB) vs two players on 8 BB 1.03 (when shoving) Aggression advantage Apply maximum pressure with open-shoves on the two medium stacks staring each other down.
Going heads-up (3rd player eliminated) 1,00 0.0% (pure Chip EV) No more ICM! Play exactly your optimal HU cEV ranges.

4. The key situation on an x50 / x100 / x1000: when the 3rd player is short-stacked

Look closely at the third row of the table above: this is where thousands of euros are won or lost on an x100 or x1000.

As long as all three players have 20 BB each, the Bubble Factor (1.06) is very low. But as soon as one of the three players drops to 3 BB, 4 BB or 6 BB while you and the other player have more than 20 BB:

  • If you are second in chips (21 BB) facing the chip leader (24 BB): colliding all-in against the chip leader while a dying player at 5 BB will be forced all-in two hands later costs you up to +6.5% equity of Risk Premium. You must drastically tighten your call all-in ranges against the chip leader, while favoring small postflop pots.
  • If you are the chip leader (24 BB): you hold the ICM stick. You can raise and open-shove wider on the 21 BB player, because they carry the risk of finishing 3rd.

To fully master the bottom of your open-shove and call-shove ranges between 6 BB and 25 BB before the jackpot lands, practice regularly on our 13Γ—13 Ranges & Range Trainer module.

5. The Heads-Up trap on a big jackpot: why ICM drops back to 0%

Many players keep playing "scared money" once they reach heads-up on an x50 or x100. This is a total mathematical misunderstanding:

As soon as the 3rd player is eliminated, the two finalists have already locked in the 12% for 2nd place. They are now playing a two-player duel for a single additional prize of 68% (all to the HU winner, nothing more to the loser). In heads-up, an 80/12/8 tournament is therefore mathematically 100% identical to a Winner-Take-All heads-up: the Bubble Factor is exactly 1.00 and the Risk Premium is 0.0%! 6. The SpinCrusher emergency protocol when an x50, x100 or x1000 opens

When a big multiplier shows up in the middle of a 6-table session, apply this 4-second protocol thanks to SpinCrusher's Grind Tools & Multitabling and cEV Tracker:

  1. Press F9 (Auto-Requeue Emergency Stop): immediately stop opening new tables to free up your attention as your x2 and x3 tables finish.
  2. Check the Dynamic Border & the effective stack in BB: SpinCrusher shows the exact effective stack in blinds in large characters to avoid any chip-reading mistake under adrenaline.
  3. Read the 40 In-Game Automatic Tags of both opponents: spot in 0.5 seconds whether you face a passive profile ([CS], [LF], [FBB]) or an aggressive regular ([3BS], [XRJ]).
  4. Open the Tactical Popover vs Fish / vs Reg: check their exact c-bet and fold-to-steal frequencies to punish every hesitation until the win.

Frequently asked questions about big Expresso & Spin jackpot strategy

Mathematically, no: when 100% of the prizepool goes to 1st and 2nd and 3rd pay €0, the value of a chip is strictly linear (0% ICM, pure Chip EV). However, your opponents almost always play with the fear of busting, which lets you widen your steals and your low-risk bluffs.
On a shared 80% / 12% / 8% structure, the ICM Risk Premium at 25 BB each is moderate (+1.5% to +2% extra equity to call an all-in). However, if the third player is short-stacked (e.g. 5 BB while you and the other player have 22 BB), your Risk Premium climbs to between +4.5% and +7% extra equity to call an all-in!
No! As soon as the 3rd player is eliminated, the two survivors have already secured the 12% for 2nd place and are fighting only for the remaining 68% promised to the winner. In heads-up, ICM disappears completely (Risk Premium = 0%) and the game goes back to 100% pure Chip EV.
Immediately stop queuing new tables (F9 emergency stop key in SpinCrusher) and focus 90% of your mental bandwidth on the big multiplier's table, where a single chip won is worth 50 to 1,000 times more than on an x2 table.
