When a room advertises a 7.00% rake in Expresso or Twister, it means that out of 1,000,000 tournaments at β¬10 (β¬10,000,000 of buy-ins collected), it pays back β¬9,300,000 to players. But beware: nearly 1.2% to 1.5% of that prizepool is locked inside the x100, x200 and x1000 multipliers. As long as you haven't hit and won one of these extremely rare jackpots, you are actually playing against an effective rake of 8.2% to 8.5%!
1. How the multiplier draw algorithm works (1,000,000 base)
Contrary to a common belief among some recreational players, the multiplier of an Expresso on Winamax or a Twister on PMU Poker and Betclic Poker depends neither on the time of day nor on the VIP level of the three registered players.
At the exact moment the third player registers, the random number generator (RNG certified by the ANJ) performs an independent draw with replacement over a grid of 1,000,000 occurrences. The mathematical contribution of each tier to the total prizepool (in buy-in multiples) is calculated by the formula:
Prizepool contribution (%) = (Multiplier Γ Occurrences per 1,000,000) / 3,000,000
Why divide by 3,000,000? Because every tournament gathers 3 players each paying 1 buy-in (that is 3,000,000 buy-ins collected over 1,000,000 games). If the sum of distributed prizepools is 2,790,000 buy-ins out of 3,000,000 collected, the return to players (RTP) is 93.00% and the nominal rake is exactly 7.00%.
2. Expresso & Expresso Nitro probability table (7% rake structure)
Here is the reference mathematical breakdown over 1,000,000 draws for the standard Expresso structure (7% nominal rake), with prize distribution and each multiplier's weight in your ROI:
| Multiplier | Occurrences / 1,000,000 | Probability (%) | Frequency (1 in...) | Prize split | Weight in the buy-in |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| x2 | 554 025 | 55,4025 % | 1 in 1.80 | 100% to 1st | 36,935 % |
| x3 | 322 500 | 32,2500 % | 1 in 3.10 | 100% to 1st | 32,250 % |
| x4 | 75 000 | 7,5000 % | 1 in 13.33 | 100% to 1st | 10,000 % |
| x5 | 35 000 | 3,5000 % | 1 in 28.57 | 100% to 1st | 5,833 % |
| x10 | 12 000 | 1,2000 % | 1 in 83.33 | 80% / 20% (or WTA) | 4,000 % |
| x20 | 1 250 | 0,1250 % | 1 in 800 | 80 % / 12 % / 8 % | 0,833 % |
| x50 | 180 | 0,0180 % | 1 in 5,556 | 80 % / 12 % / 8 % | 0,300 % |
| x100 | 40 | 0,0040 % | 1 in 25,000 | 80 % / 12 % / 8 % | 0,133 % |
| x1000 (Max Jackpot) | 5 | 0,0005 % | 1 in 200,000 | 80 % / 12 % / 8 % | 0,167 % |
| TOTAL DISTRIBUTED | 1 000 000 | 100,00 % | β | Nominal rake: ~7.0% | ~90,45 % Γ 93,00 %* |
*Note: On grids that include promotional tiers or intermediate jackpots (x200 / β¬1M), the total distributed reaches exactly 93.00% of buy-ins (7.00% rake on stakes β₯ β¬1).
3. Twister structure on PMU Poker & Betclic (iPoker network)
On the iPoker network (PMU Poker and Betclic Poker), the Twister distribution (7% rake on standard stakes) stands out by a slightly higher frequency of x3 and x5 multipliers at the expense of intermediate tiers:
- Regular multipliers (
x2,x3,x5,x8): they represent more than 98.8% of all Twisters you will start in a year and are entirely Winner-Take-All (100% to 1st). - Higher multipliers (
x15,x50,x100,x1000): from the upper tier (often fromx15orx20depending on the buy-in), the prizepool is shared between the three players using the 80% for 1st / 12% for 2nd / 8% for 3rd key (or 75% / 15% / 10%), which introduces real ICM pressure that we detail in our guide How to Play a Big Expresso Jackpot (x10, x50, x1000) & ICM.
4. Nominal rake vs effective rake: the truth about your monthly cash flow
A serious grinder who plays 2,500 Expressos a month (30,000 games a year) has a significant probability of not hitting a single x1000 during their year. To calculate your monthly grind's profitability without depending on the lottery at the top of the pyramid, you must use the Effective Rake:
- Total nominal rake (including all jackpots up to x1000): 7.00%.
- Effective rake excluding x1000 and x200 (what you actually face over a 20,000-game sample): about 7.65% to 7.90%.
- Effective rake excluding x50, x100 and x1000 (your daily cash flow on x2 to x20 multipliers): about 8.25% to 8.85%.
5. What minimum cEV (Chip EV) do you need to beat the Effective Rake?
On a 500-chip (25 BB) starting stack, your share of the prizepool won is directly linked to your expected chip gain per tournament (cEV) through the fundamental equation:
Win % (ITM%) = (500 + cEV) / 1500
Here is the exact conversion table between your cEV level and your financial profitability:
| Profitability target (500-chip stack) | Required ITM % | Minimum required cEV | Nitro format equivalent (300 chips) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure theoretical break-even (0% rake) | 33,33 % | 0 cEV | 0 cEV |
| Beat the 7.0% nominal rake (infinite long run) | 35,84 % | +37.6 cEV | +22.6 cEV |
| Beat the effective rake (~8.0% excluding x1000) | 36,24 % | +43.6 cEV | +26.2 cEV |
| Beat the daily effective rake (~8.5% excluding β₯x50) | 36,44 % | +46.6 cEV | +28.0 cEV |
| Solid winning grinder (+4% pre-rakeback ROI) | 37,27 % | +59.0 cEV | +35.4 cEV |
| Top Crusher of the stake (+7% pre-rakeback ROI) | 38,35 % | +75.2 cEV | +45.1 cEV |

6. How to audit your multipliers and maximize your EV with SpinCrusher
Because every chip won on an x10 or an x50 is worth ten to fifty times more than a chip on an x2, SpinCrusher includes five decisive weapons:
- Tracking of real vs theoretical multiplier distribution in our cEV Tracker, Bankroll & Time Slots: see at a glance whether you are on a multiplier downswing compared with the official probabilities.
- Slots Advisor (EV+ time slots): identify the exact hours of the week when the ratio of recreational players makes your cEV jump by +15 points.
- In-Game Automatic Tagging (40 badges): thanks to our HUD & Automatic Tagging, you know from the first hand of a big jackpot whether your opponent overfolds in the BB or limp-folds under pressure.
- Off-table work and mental protection: combine the Field Analysis & MDA Leakfinder, the 13Γ13 Range Trainer and the 15h Mental Shield of our Grind Tools to never spew your cEV at the end of a session.
